Community features & your data

Saved stories and reading progress

Your reading list and progress are stored in this browser’s local storage. They are not uploaded to our community database and do not sync between devices, browsers, or the www and non-www versions of the site. You can remove items or clear the list and progress on the saved stories page. Clearing browser data also removes them. The browser keeps up to one hundred saved/recent items, prioritising saved stories. If browser storage is blocked, saving may not work; the page will tell you.

Quiz results and sharing

Quiz streaks and recent daily results stay in your browser. Results are self-reported practice scores, not a verified competition or leaderboard. When you choose Share, your device’s share menu or WhatsApp opens with your score and quiz link. Nothing is posted automatically. Copy and download options let you share later yourself.

Social sharing

The article and home-page sharing menus offer your device’s share sheet, WhatsApp, Facebook, X and copy-link options. Social links send the public page URL (and, where supported, its title) to the chosen service only when you click. We do not embed social-network tracking widgets for these buttons. Each service controls its own sign-in, preview, cookies and final posting step. Nothing is posted automatically, and shared links do not include your local reading position or reading list.

“I learned something” reactions

The count is shared, but no public voter list exists. Clicking the reaction creates a random browser identifier in an HTTP-only first-party cookie, valid for up to one year. The server stores a hash of that identifier against the article so a repeated click or request does not add duplicate reactions. Clicking again removes your reaction for that article.

This is one reaction per browser identifier, not proof of one reaction per person. Blocking or deleting cookies, switching devices, or using another hostname can change how your reaction is remembered. No account or email address is required. Reaction records remain until removed or cleared during maintenance.

Suggestions and corrections

The form sends your suggestion type, chosen language, title, explanation, optional public source link and submission time to a private Cloudflare D1 database. You do not need to provide a name or email address. Do not include private personal information, confidential documents or links containing access tokens.

Suggestions are for editorial review, not an automatic publication service. A cleanup during our scheduled hourly website build removes submissions older than ninety days from the active queue. Delayed or failed builds can delay cleanup. This does not promise immediate deletion from infrastructure backups. A reference number confirms receipt; it is not a promise of a reply or a publication date.

Service operation

Cloudflare hosts the website and community API. The server uses request network information for rate limiting to reduce spam; IP addresses are not written into our reaction or suggestion tables. Shared networks may sometimes share a request limit. Hosting providers may process their own operational/security logs.

Videos load YouTube’s privacy-enhanced player when you choose to play them. Video thumbnails and some credited images are loaded from external hosts. Those services receive the requests needed to display their content.

The website does not automatically send these community submissions to an AI model. See our AI-use policy.
